A similar scheme was dreamed up by the owner of Turtle Island Resort in Fiji. The resort management would purchase captive sea turtles from nearby villages, then "sell" them to resort guests. The guests would then paint their names on the turtle shells and free the animals. The paint rendered the shells worthless on the illegal turtle shell market and the turtles got away. Win, win.
I love these little forms of eco-tourism in action. Protecting the turtles and native bird life is a great way for native peoples to protect their wildlife while earning a living that will help prevent further damage to their ecosystems. I hope that the travel industry helps support these small efforts by locals to help their environment.
